The 1881-S Morgan Silver Dollar was struck at the San Francisco Mint with a mintage of 12,760,000 pieces and is the most abundant high-grade Morgan dollar of them all. George T. Morgan's design shows a left-facing head of Liberty in a Phrygian cap wreathed in cotton and wheat, with an eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch on the reverse. The coin weighs 26.73 grams in 90% silver and 10% copper, measures 38.1 mm and contains 0.77344 troy oz of silver.

Nearly the entire mintage went into Treasury vaults and stayed there until the great releases of the 1950s and 1960s, so the 1881-S survives in gem condition in numbers no other nineteenth-century silver coin approaches. It is consequently the date recommended to anyone buying a first Morgan dollar: superbly struck, freely available at MS-65 and above, and priced by supply rather than by scarcity.
